Who We Are?
About me
Hello my name is Craig. I am 47 years old. Whilst not suffering from any serious or debilitating medical conditions, one thing that I have struggled with my entire life has been sleep. From a child through my teens and into adulthood I used to struggle to fall asleep at night causing me to stare at the ceiling for hours. When I would eventually get to sleep if I then woke in the morning on an alarm I would feel tired, unrested, lethargic etc. Even if I slept in I still felt tired unrested and lethargic.
A lack of sleep would permeate throughout my day. Because I didn’t know any better when I was young I didn’t realise how much my poor sleep was affecting me growing up. As I’ve gotten older I can feel the effect it has always had. I’ve heard it said that only two nights of poor sleep and your body starts exhibiting symptoms of being pre diabetic. Words I would use to describe how I felt would be blunt verses sharp, distracted verses focused , numb verses aware, hazy verses clear, half a step too slow verses I’m waiting, proactive verses procrastinating, creative verses writers block.
I’m very confident my sleep issues also affected my testosterone levels when I was developing as a teenager. It is very clear now in the literature the effect poor sleep has on recovery, and testosterone is highest first thing in the morning.
I would now consider myself a bio hacker, someone who delves into the inner workings of cause and effect regarding human health. I love learning about my body, how it works and how I can address issues I’m having.
With sleep being my biggest issue I have tried a lot of the sleep health advice out there to improve my sleep quality and quantity. Most things I found did not move the needle for me. One thing that does improve my sleep and that I use every night is a water cooled blanket on my bed. It helps with dissipating hot spots on the mattress and enabling me to not toss and turn as much.
The breakthrough.
In June 2023* I made a change to my morning routine and it has had a profound impact on my circadian rhythm and my ability to sleep. I am now in bed by 9pm and I am waking up and getting out of bed before the sun rises. When I wake in the morning I feel like I have slept for 7+ hrs. I feel refreshed a ready to live my day.
Whereas before at 9pm I would be wired and tired I now get the sleepy feeling signal about 6-7pm and by 8pm I’m looking for bed and start to wind down and get ready for sleep. I now look forward to going to bed. I am now in bed by 9pm often well before and usually fall asleep within 30 minutes which for me is night and day better than before.
As a result of my much improved sleep I have found other bodily processes are beginning to function better as well. It’s also still a work in progress but at least 50% of the time now I also go through the night without having to get up to pee at all.
There are no miracle cures, no be all and end all pills. But together with another habit I have implemented I have also been able to drastically improve my digestion as well. I first saw improvement about two months after I started to sleep better and have since taken it to the next level with this other habit. Beforehand my poop would float and now it sinks which is a sign of a more complete digestion and I’m usually on a 4 on the poop scale which is ideal. I also now regularly poop twice a day, in the morning and evening.
The early morning is my favourite time of day too. I love getting up before the sun.
